About this service

This platform provides machine-readable access to controlled vocabularies and ontologies published by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Secretariat. It offers a vocabulary browser, a SPARQL endpoint, and a REST API to support interoperability and data integration across biodiversity information systems.

Access methods

  • Browse — use this interface to explore concepts and their relationships
  • SPARQL — query the triplestore at /sparql/kmgbf
  • REST API — JSON endpoints at /api (documentation at /api/docs)
  • Download — get the full dataset at /download/ (Turtle and JSON)
  • Visualize — explore the full framework as an interactive graph at /kmgbf/explore

URI resolution

All concepts have persistent URIs under http://metadata.cbd.int/. These URIs support content negotiation following the W3C Cool URIs pattern: request HTML to get this browsing interface, or request text/turtle, application/ld+json, or application/rdf+xml to get machine-readable RDF for the specific concept.

Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF)

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework was adopted by the Convention on Biological Diversity at COP-15 (Montreal, December 2022). It sets out an ambitious plan to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 and achieve a vision of living in harmony with nature by 2050.

The framework comprises 4 goals and 23 targets, monitored through 204 indicators organized into four roles: headline, binary, component, and complementary. All data is available in English, French, and Spanish.

The monitoring framework was finalized at COP-16 (Cali, October 2024) and is derived from Decision 16/31 (Annexes I, II, and III).

Source code & examples

The ontology and data files are published on GitHub. The repository includes example SPARQL queries and REST API usage to get you started.
